Black Jax, 1987, Montebello

This is some of “Young Blood” by #BlackJax. According to Discogs they were James Lerie on Bass, Dickie Ray and Mark Barnett had both played guitar, Sard was on drums and the late Gary Pogo was on vocals. I found out about them a few years ago after reading Teenage Alcoholics: Punk Rock in East Los Angeles, an excellent article by #JimmyAlvarado of #ElMonte’s #OurBandSucks on @razorcakegorsky’s websiteCan someone please connect me with him?)That’s what the quote from the previous post is from. Jimmy’s article is an in-depth and ambitious rundown of many key punk bands from #EastLA and the #SGV that were active from the late ‘70s to early ‘90s but it’s, by his own admission, not the definitive record. Do yourself a favor and read that here and then buy the article as a zine for 4 bucks (2$ plus 2$ shipping) here. It has tons of images that aren’t on the website, but more importantly, it’s as close as this scene gets to having its own We’ve Got the Neutron Bomb or Please Kill Me and should be supported. I can’t wait for my copy to show up. The flyer is from a pdf of the zine.

I first heard them on Razorcake Podcast #61: With Jimmy Alvarado after following a link in the aforementioned article. The podcast is 19 tracks of East Los and SGV bands and some commentary with co-host #ToddTaylor throughout. Good stuff! I’ve listened to this episode and the sequel a few times since discovering them a few years ago..

Anyway, the Black Jax CD is out of print, but I was able to find all of the tracks on YouTube and made a playlist of the album. Please enjoy! I’m listening to it for the first time as I type this and so far I really dig it. There definitely would have been a homemade Black Jax patch on my punk rock Dickies jacket if I had heard this stuff in high school. I’ll rip some MP3s and post a link when I get around to it.
